game idea (2020)
Thoughts are going to be a little jumbled here, my apologies in advance. And guess what, I suck at coding, so you're just going to need to deal with plain text.
Premise
Summoned to a world/city that is on the brink of corruption, individuals have been tasked with aiding the world from the darkness that seeks to swallow it whole. The ruler of the land has offered her power and a promise on arrival in exchange for aid. Characters will be asked to fight monsters, others who have fallen into corruption (both literal and figurative), and defend the world. The ruler has offered to each and every single person one wish that can transcend all boundaries but only once all of her power has returned and the world is set right.
Each and every person who arrives in the world loses most of their abilities* in exchange for new ones. On the surface, every person can now use magic and will find themselves drawn to a very specific element/ability set per player request and creation (with mod help). These people will be called...something. I'm flipping back and forth between Sorcerers, Witches, Promised... You'll see why in a bit.
Because everyone now has access to magic and MUST rely on the world's inherent magical nature, they will now also slowly become corrupted by the magic they're wielding. This means that every month or so, they need to purify their magic in some manner or risk turning into the very monsters they're fighting against.
[*Exceptions being something inherent to themselves, like someone who's a werewolf can still be a werewolf but with some limitations, etc.]
Sloppy, I know, I'm still working on the gritty details and I don't want to outlandishly spoil the ideas I have.
Genre?
Fantasy with a Victorian backdrop. I'll say there's mild fridge horror/body horror that can be played up if you want to write out the slow descent into something monstrous because you can't purify yourself, etc. Mild political intrigue and mystery. Smut-friendly.
Player/Character Cap and Applications
25-30 players, maybe 40 at maximum. One character per player unless it's in the 20's range, then maybe 2.
Game is invite-only and I'm not budging on that. Like how Drift Fleet does their invites; a player in the game can invite someone else and basically "vouches" for them.
Any character ideally 16+, maybe 18+.
Applications are standard but I'd want the application to have a spot where you have to not only talk about character suitability but also give 2-3 plot hooks you want to explore for the character so as a mod I know which story points to nudge you down.
Game Mechanics
Basically there will be a magic tree list around what's applicable and what's out of bounds/too game breaking. I want to encourage player creativity and you'll read that word a lot. CREATIVITY. You want to do it and it makes sense and you won't godmod people? Cool, do it.
Magic is, essentially, akin to Madoka Magica: you have a designated element but can have some spells in your repertoire that others have access to as well (like basic healing spells or something like that). You have access to a magic tree that is your own, even if it overlaps and is similar to another's. Want your character to be a Sorcerer of Song and they can charm people or use their voice to heal? Go for it. Want to be a weather witch? Excellent. Always had a dream of writing a mage who can twist bones to their bidding? Me too, fam.
Like Madoka, though, the magic is slowly killing you and devouring your soul, corrupting you to make you some horrible monster one day. Oh and people are aware of that so no one's really happy to see you. Sorry.
The good news is that you can work to purify your magic and keep a kind of balance between seeking more power and not giving into the ocean of magic you could possibly get your hands on. There's always a struggle because the path is slippery and one wrong step will send you off the ledge.
The other mechanic is partnerships. Not to take anything from other games but at the core of this is that people should be partnering up and making bonds/pacts with their fellows because two or even three channeling their magic together on contracts or quests or events means that you can perform stronger, melded magics while tethering yourself to another person. It's these bonds that can help keep someone from falling so easily down the corruption path.
Someone who DOES give in will turn into a monster and will need to die. BOSS FIGHTS. That character will, however, die. Characters can work to find ways to bring someone back from the dead once. The second death will be permanent. Everyone gets one!
Structure/Events
Events will be monthly with some "downtime" where characters will be able to pick up contracts/quests to explore the world (think the way Crosscheck did things instead of Eachdraidh). These won't have word counts but will, instead, be intentional to push people to pair/partner up and investigate things and make a name for themselves. Creativity is the name of the game here. The game is supposed to be more about collaborative storytelling with people who are (hopefully) active in propelling the plot forward and shaping things the way they want.
Events will vary from minor political plots (investigate a noble) but will mostly involve around trying to stop the corruption by ferreting out the cause and finding ways to push it back and purify the land. This will range from monster hunting, dealing with antagonistic NPCs, and questioning your moral choices! While this isn't a game about war, there is definitely going to be non-monster types of conflict like deplorable conditions in towns or issues with the ruler, so even for those who aren't always interested in writing fighting scenes, there's things to do.
Activity
Because we're all old and slow, I'm going to say two links are required as proof with 3 or more comments AND a short write-up around what your character did for the month and what plans you have for next month or just in general for your character. This can be spun into having rewards as well for what they've done.
